I’ve got to start by saying that the Panel of Judges first 7-inch
single, Blind as a Bat (Chapter Music), is still one of my all time
favourite singles and it was with great expectations that this new
single arrived. No disappointment here. Panel of Judges have a sound
distinctly Melbourne, recalling the best moments of the 90s ramshakled
noise-pop champions like Sleepy Township and Huon and more than a
passing similarity to The Cannanes and those New Zealand legends The
Clean.
On this four track single, the band’s sound hasn’t deviated far from
previous releases. Still rough around the edges, desperate, melodious,
catchy and dischordant guitars built around driving rhythms. Recorded
by Seth Rees (I Want A Hovercraft), ‘Forest for the trees’ and ‘Open
Casket’ are highlights, particular Alison Bolger’s lead vocals on
‘Forest for the trees’. Bolger was one time member of Sleepy Township
so fans of that band will not be disappointed in this. The other three
tracks are lead by Dion Nania (ex-Golden Lifestyle Band) and his
dishevelled vocals never miss the mark. Bring on the new album.
